Summer Food Plots and Post Season Scouting

Posted on 27. Mar, 2009 by admin in Hunting Tips, Property

It’s time to start thinking about planting food plots and hanging new deer stands. The time to start planting corn and soybeans is fast approaching depending on your part of the country. Both corn and soybeans are excellent forms of protein and great choices as forage for deer as well as turkeys and other wildlife. Both of these are annuals which means they must be replanted each year.

Perennials are plants like clovers and chicory that when planted last more than two years before they must be replanted. Both are great food sources for deer and wild turkey. These plots require little maintenance once planted. Every once in a while they may have to be mowed, but for the most part the wildlife takes care of keeping the plot maintained if you have a large deer population.

While you are out turkey hunting and planning food plot locations, also be aware of deer sign and use this as a chance to find new deer stand locations. While you can look at topographical maps all day and guess where the deer travel will occur, it can be even more effective to use sign to see where they are actually traveling.

Remember thes things while you are turkey hunting and planning new food plots.
