Delta Waterfowl Duck Habitat Report – July 6, 2009
Standing in a prairie pothole in Manitoba, Delta’s Rob Olson and Jim Fisher discuss the outlook for this coming season based on pair counts and the potential for duck production across the breeding grounds.
Excellent water levels and ample nesting cover (thanks in large part to CRP) in the Dakotas resulted in more breeding pairs of ducks being counted in the American pothole country than on the Canadian breeding grounds during the breeding population survey.
“This is excellent news for duck hunters in the Central and Mississippi flyways”, says Delta President Rob Olson. “But with two thirds of the prairie potholes found in Canada, imagine the potential for duck production if ALUS was implemented in Canada”.
