Tree Stand Placement

When picking a tree stand location for the upcoming deer season, there are a lot of factors that go in to the decision making process. The best way to make sure your stand is in the right location is to take into account all of these factors.

1. Eating and Sleeping- Think about how important food is to you as a hunter and you eat 3 meals a day. Now, think about the fact that a deer only eats and sleeps. It wakes up, feeds for hours an then goes to sleep. This process repeats itself over and over again. Now during the rut, there is one more part to their day and that is the mating part. But in most situations mating replaces both the eating and the sleeping. So position your tree stand somewhere between food and bed and you will really improve your chances. Also, hunting directly on a food plot can produces some great results.

2. Cover- It is very important that the tree you choose has a lot of cover, either from the tree you are in or the trees behind you. You don’t want a deer to look up in your tree and be able to pick out your outline because the only backdrop you have is the sky. If this happens it may be game over as far as harvesting that deer goes.

3 Wind- Pay close attention to where deer will be traveling to and from and mark trails and tree stand locations on an aerial map. Avoid hunting stands on days that the wind direction would cause your scent to be blown in the deer’s direction.

There are so many factors in choosing a tree stand location but these are some of the most important factors to consider. If your tree stand location has all 3 of these factors then you will greatly improve your chances of harvesting a mature buck this upcoming season.
